We are thrilled to announce a new partnership between FOP Friends and MedicAlert UK, aimed at enhancing safety and peace of mind for those living with FOP and their loved ones.

MedicAlert UK is the nation’s only charity medical ID service provider, dedicated to protecting people with complex medical conditions by ensuring their vital information is readily accessible during emergencies. This means that in critical situations, when someone may be unable to speak or advocate for themselves, their most important health details are instantly available to paramedics and emergency healthcare professionals

How does it work?

Each member wears a custom-engraved ID, most commonly designed as bracelets or necklaces for easy detection on pulse points by attending paramedics.  Paramedics are trained to look for these IDs.  However, a wide range of other items and accessories are also available, with designs and sizes suitable for both children and adults.

The engraved ID includes essential medical conditions and a unique membership number, which is linked to a secure digital health record and a 24/7 emergency helpline.  This integrated system allows paramedics and healthcare professionals to deliver immediate, informed care – a crucial advantage for those with ultra-rare conditions like FOP.

Furthermore, MedicAlert IDs feature the internationally recognised symbol of healing, providing immediate visual confirmation of their importance, especially when travelling.  The 24/7 helpline facilitates access to comprehensive medical records anytime, anywhere in the world, in over 100 languages.

Who is eligible?

This offer is available to those living with FOP (fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva) or POH (progressive osseous heteroplasia) in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland.

Any child under the age of 10, living with FOP or POH in the UK or RoI, is eligible for the MedicAlert Early Start programme.

Why have FOP Friends partnered with MedicAlert?

As a charity, we are always looking for ways to improve the care those in our FOP and POH community receive.  And as parents, we have first-hand experience of the challenges people face when trying to access emergency healthcare for their loved one.

We have collaborated with the nurse team at MedicAlert and the FOP specialists at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital to ensure the correct information is available to our members, should an emergency situation arise.

Through this partnership, those living with FOP will be able to receive a year’s free membership to MedicAlert, once they have purchased an ID.  These start at around £20 -£25.

For children under 10, membership is free until their 10th birthday, and they will also receive a complimentary starter bracelet.
